How to correct others and still be friends

Remember the saying “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel”? This is one of the foundations of emotional intelligence. Apply this rule whenever you’re correcting anyone. Avoid the urge to embarrass someone just because you’re right.

Here are some examples of how to tactfully correct others:

  • “John, that’s what I thought too, but I found out that...”
  • “Tina, I've made the very same mistake. Then I discovered that...”
  • “Because of the circumstances, I can see how anyone would draw that conclusion. What I found out, though, was...”
