How to scan text from images with Microsoft Office

Microsoft Office installs with a printer driver called Microsoft Office Document Image Writer. You should see it as one of your printing options. If you have an image of text you want to scan so you can edit the text in Microsoft Word, then double click on the image to open it in any program such as Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

Select the appropriate command for printing the document, but choose "Microsoft Office Document Image Writer" as your printer. The image will be saved as an MDI (Microsoft Office Document Imaging Format) file.

Now open the MDI file to launch the Microsoft Office Document Imaging program. Go to the "Tools" menu and select "Recognize Text Using OCR..." Then go to the "Tools" menu again and select "Send Text To Word..." After you do this, you'll see a new Word file containing the editable text from the image.
