Here's a simple spreadsheet for quickly estimating break-even costs. If I were wanting to sell a book for $12.95, I estimate my one-time fixed costs to be $4,800. My variable cost is $5 per book since I have to pay for a shipping envelope, mailing label, and postage for each book sold. If I only sell 1,000 books, I'll make $3,150.
