Why you might have a job instead of a career

Path101 tells us 10 reasons why we might have a job, but not a career:

  1. You chose your jump from the only job postings that were available at the time, instead of going out and seeking the job you wanted, whether or not it was currently available.
  2. Your professional networking stopped the moment you got your job, and will start up again day you quit.
  3. You've never seriously explored other areas of your company or talked with people who worked in them about what they, because you're afraid to make waves.
  4. You don't have an open dialog with your supervisor about your career goals and whether or not they can be achieved in your job or even in your company.
  5. You've never set career goals.
  6. You do all the work that you are told to do, and you do it well, but you never initiate new projects in areas that interest you.
  7. You went for a safe job with job security versus taking bigger risks early in your career.
  8. Your career isn't your number one priority, so you didn't want to spend too much time focusing on it. Now, you spend way too many hours in the office--perhaps a little focus on it early wouldn't have been such a bad idea.
  9. You simply don't know what you want to do, so you just picked something.
  10. You did what other people--family, friends, career counselors--told you to do, versus listening to yourself.
