From the Men's Health article "Avoid Foot-in-Mouth Disease" by Gil Schwartz, some things to avoid saying:
"It's not my fault"
There's nothing that makes a group want to kill one of its members more than the sight of that member trying to push blame away from himself. The true trick...is to politely, and sincerely whip yourself for what you think you may have actually done wrong to the point where people say, "Hey, Joe, don't feel so bad about it. Everybody makes mistakes."
"I've had just about enough of your crap, Larry"
At most companies, there's a natural discretion that stifles displays of hostility. This is a good thing. This doesn't mean you can't make your points..."Here are the six places where I disagree with you Larry, with all due respect." [Also see Effective ways to dissent.]
"Disney does it better"
There are actually people dumb enough to compare their current employer with some other, presumably superior organization.
