George Lakoff offers a tip on how to "agree" with an opponent in his article A Brief Guide to the Debates:
Instead of saying "I agree with Sen. McCain ...", Obama should try "Sen. McCain agrees with me that ... " The former frames McCain as setting the standard. The latter frames Obama as setting the standard. Or try " Sen. McCain and I agree" if you are stressing bipartisanship.This approach also prevents spin doctors and the media from taking comments out of context. For example, contrast the headline "Obama Agrees with McCain" with "Obama and McCain Agree."
