How to defuse confrontation

The Time article Why Barack Obama Is Winning reported that "General David Petraeus deployed overwhelming force when he briefed Barack Obama and two other Senators in Baghdad last July."

Obama's reply to General Patraeus: "You know, if I were in your shoes, I would be making the exact same argument," he began. "Your job is to succeed in Iraq on as favorable terms as we can get. But my job as a potential Commander in Chief is to view your counsel and interests through the prism of our overall national security."

Obama took the approach mentioned in a previous post 2 simple steps to conflict resolution:

“Always restate the other party’s position to his or her satisfaction before stating your own point of view.” You don’t have to accept it, just restate it until the other party is satisfied that you understand it. Comprehension seeds a sense of empathy. Articulating their view first defuses confrontation.
