OpenWith.org tells you which free programs you can use to open any file extension. For example, if someone emails you a file with the extension .zip (e.g., "contracts.zip"), then OpenWith tells me I can use a free program called WinRAR or 7-Zip to open the file.
In this example, I have a photo in RAW format that I downloaded from my digital camera. I see I can use either Picasa or XnView to open the image.
