AVG Anti-Virus 8.5 Free Edition is a good free program to use for virus protection. The catch with the free version, though, is that you have to manually update the virus definitions periodically. Not really a big problem until you forget to do so and end up catching a virus.
If you're forgetful, you might want to check out a free program called AVUS. It is a small utility that works in the background performing scheduled updates to the AVG virus definition file.
