Author Susan Scott talks about The Best and Worst Practices of Leaders in BusinessWeek.
On hiring for "smarts," she says:
Increasing a company's "smarts" by 25% (i.e., hiring people with credentials, pedigrees, high IQs) rarely increases revenue growth by 25%. Instead, your organization suffers from excessive certitude, people fighting to be "right" rather than to get it right. Einstein advised: "Take care not to make the intellect your God. It has powerful muscles, but no personality. It cannot lead, it can only serve." We've all known smart, empty people who ultimately failed.
Instead, Susan advises to hire for "Smart+Heart:"
Hire individuals who will bring with them not only intelligence, but also a full and open heart which they extend to others. Your most valuable currency is not IQ, multiple degrees, industry experience, or the ability to build a cool PowerPoint deck. The most valuable currency of your organization is relationships and emotional capital.
